So in order to have a successful Christian business a person needs to (1) set goals that are pleasing to God. (2) Go about meeting those goals in a Godly manner.
For this discussion when speaking of success in business we are speaking not only of having a good name but also and specifically of a person reaching sound financial goals. We will consider that aspect as it relates to a Christian business as Scripture teaches quite extensively on the principles of finance. The Bible also gives numerous examples of the far reaching consequences of violating the principles. The fact that God is very much interested in Christian values as they relate to business and money is very evident throughout his Word.
WISDOM AND MONEY - God made a very clear relationship between wisdom and the use of money. For instance, when Solomon asked for wisdom, God informed him that he would also give him riches. Yet getting riches without first having wisdom will cause a person more often than not to fall into lustful behavior and make many foolish mistakes.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning wisdom and the knowledge of the holy is understanding." Proverbs 9:10. "The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich and he addeth no sorrow with it." Proverbs 10:22.
A CLEAR CONSCIENCE - As we seek to know the Lord more fully, which will also bring about Godly fear, we will most likely come to see an area in our life that if not corrected will prevent our realizing true success. That often reveals the problem of not having a clear conscience.
Too often the true underlying reason many people start their own business is due to their conflict with authority. If having your own successful Christian business is your goal, it would be wise to deal with this problem head-on. Have you had conflicts with anyone who has exercised authority over you? Do you tend to have a strong will and resist receiving instruction from someone in authority? On the other hand, was there ever a time when you need help—so during that time you eagerly obeyed the person in authority. Then, when things smoothed out you changed your attitude again?
SUBMIT TO AUTHORITY —Submit your will totally to God and be willing to obey the authorities that he puts in your life. You will find that when you do your conscience will be clear and you will be more able to hear God's promptings as he guides you into the measure of success that he plans for you. His plans will be far superior to any of yours - in all aspects.
"For I know the thought that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." Jeremiah 29:11.
STEPPING STONES —Another important aspect of having a Christian witness in business is our degree of gratefulness. Gratefulness is a major stepping stone to success. Often our pride tells us that we have achieved when in reality it is God and others doing for us and working through us. Gratefulness must be manifested toward clients and those who eventually come under us as employees, who in fact help bring about our success. We will be judged accordingly, as Colossians 4:1-2 implies; "knowing that we also have a Master in heaven" we should give to them that which is just and equal giving honor to whom honor is due."
So, now you have a clear conscience and you recognize fully that your talents and abilities are not of yourself but are a gift from God. And you have a God-given dream of establishing your own business for the purpose of receiving God's blessings - whereby you may bless others. Here are some additional steps to take on your road to success. (Continued in next blog)
